Who is this course for?

Are you interested in working with people to provide beauty treatments that help them to look and feel well?

In Year 1 (Level 2), you will develop your skills in areas such as: facials, eye treatments, waxing, manicure, pedicure, make-up, the principles of health and safety, and reception duties.

In Year 2 (Level 3), you will extend your Beauty Therapist skills by covering a larger range of specialist beauty treatments including: body massage, body and facial electrical treatment and hot stones massage.

You will also develop your business and sales skills by learning about the financial aspects of running a Beauty Business, and how to go about promoting additional goods and services.

 

What are the entry requirements for the course?

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade D (grade 3) or higher, including Maths or English Language to start Level 2.

All learners who have not achieved a grade 4 in English and Maths will be enrolled on the iGCSE programmes as part of this programme of study.

 

How long is this course?

Both Level 2 and Level 3 are one-year full-time courses.

Level 2 must be completed to progress to Level 3.

A two year full time programme beginning in September and ending in June. 

 

What will I study on this course?

Level 2 Units:

Provide facial skin care – In this unit you will learn about maintaining and improving facial skin condition using exfoliation, skin warming, comedone extraction, facial massage, mask treatments
and facial moisturising products. You will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene procedures throughout your work.

Remove hair using wax techniques – This unit is about removing hair using waxing techniques. The areas to be treated include the eyebrows, face, legs, underarm, and bikini line. You will need to be able to consult with the client, and prepare and plan the treatment. You will also need to provide aftercare advice, including the avoidance of certain activities and the use of home care products.

Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments – This unit is about providing eyelash and brow treatments. It covers the use of a variety of consultation techniques to establish the treatment outcomes  required.  You will be able to provide eyebrow shaping, and eyebrow and eyelash tinting treatments for clients with different colouring characteristics.

Client care and communication in beauty-related industries – This unit is about client care and communication in beauty-related industries. You will develop your communication skills to deal with  consultations, complaints, client comfort and all forms of client care. You will develop a client-centred approach to all your treatments.

Provide manicure treatments – This unit is about providing manicure services to clients. You will learn about consulting with the client, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a treatment plan. You will also learn about filing and buffing the nails, using skin and cuticle treatments, massaging the hand and lower arm and using a suitable nail finish.
You will need to carry out effective health, safety and hygienic working practices.

Provide pedicure treatments – This unit is about providing pedicure services to clients. It covers consulting with the client, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. It also covers filing the nails, applying skin and cuticle treatments, cleaning and drying the feet, removing excess hard skin, massaging the foot and lower leg, and providing a suitable nail finish. You will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene throughout your work. 

Follow health and safety practice in salon – The aim of this unit is to increase your understanding of health and safety and its importance in the salon in which you work.  You will develop the ability to carry out a simple risk analysis, recognise a hazard, responsibly deal with the hazards you have found and follow safe and hygienic working practices.  You will also need to be able to locate fire fighting equipment, first aid resources and have an awareness of fire, emergency and evacuation procedures. This unit applies to hairdressing, beauty therapy, nail and barbering salons and spas.

Provide Make-up – In this unit you will provide a variety of makeup for a variety of occasions, including day, evening, and special occasions. You will be able to work with a variety of skin types and apply a wide range of make up products to different skin tones and age groups.

Apply LED Gel Polish – You will develop your knowledge and understanding and skills in applying, maintaining and removing LED polish.

Apply Skin tanning techniques – In this unit you will learn the application of self-tanning products, including spray and manual tan application to specific areas of the body, including the face, neck and shoulders, lower arms and hand, lower legs and feet.

Provide eyelash perming – In this unit is about preparing for and providing eyelash perming treatments to create a lifted lash effect.

Level 3 Units:

Provide electrical epilation treatments – in this unit the skills involved will be for assessing, preparing for and carrying out electrical needle epilation treatments to remove hair, using alternating current and blend techniques.

Provide body electrical treatments – in this unit you will improve body and skin condition using galvanic, electro muscle stimulator, micro- current, lymphatic drainage and micro- dermabrasion equipment. It covers the skills involved in providing a thorough consultation with the client to formulate a specific course of treatment tailored to individual client needs.

Provide facial electrotherapy treatments – This unit is about improving face and skin condition using direct high frequency, galvanic, EMS, microcurrent and lymphatic drainage equipment. You will be required to formulate a specific course of treatments tailored to individual client needs.

Provide body electrotherapy treatments – This unit is about improving body and skin condition using electrical equipment such as galvanic, microcurrent and lymphatic drainage. You will learn how to formulate a specific course of treatments tailored to individual client needs.

Provide body massage – This unit is about the skills involved in providing body massage treatments. You will learn about the classical Swedish massage movements and will be required to adapt massage techniques to suit individual client needs. You will also learn about health, safety, hygiene and client care.

Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon – Through this unit you will develop your skills in a supervisory role focusing on health and safety within your salon. You will recognise salon hazards, carry out risk assessments and then implement the necessary actions. You will monitor and support your colleagues to ensure your salon complies with health and safety requirements. You will implement and supervise salon procedures for all aspects of salon safety and security including the need for insurance.

Intimate waxing for female clients – This unit is about removing hair from intimate areas using various waxing techniques. You will be able to consult with clients, prepare for waxing services and produce treatment plans. You will need to provide treatment advice to clients particularly around the avoidance of certain activities and home care advice.

Apply stone therapy massage – This unit is about providing hot and cold stone therapy treatments. It covers both massage and the placing of stones on the head, face and body. The ability to adapt
stone therapy treatments to individual client needs is also a requirement.

Provide Indian head massage – This unit is about the skills involved in providing Indian head massage treatment. The ability to adapt massage techniques to suit individual client needs and the environment in which the massage takes place is very important. You will also learn how to perform Indian head massage with and without the use of oils. To carry out this unit you will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene procedures throughout your work. 

 

What Qualification will I gain?

VTCT Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

 

Will I go out on work experience?

Courses at Highlands are about preparing you for the world of work. As part of your course, you will learn how to go about presenting yourself to an employer to stand the best chance of getting the job you are looking for. 

You will spend one day per week in a work placement.

 

What does this course lead on to?

Once qualified to Level 3 as a Beauty Therapist, you will have gained the skills and confidence to apply for jobs in areas such as:

Salons | Hotels | Health spas | Cruise liners | Department stores.

It will also enable you to progress onto related higher education courses, or careers in theatrical and film makeup.

Additional Information

All 6th form courses are subject to minimum enrolment numbers. Where a course does not meet the required number, it will be reluctantly cancelled for that academic year. Applicants affected will be contacted and offered a transfer to another course if a suitable one is available.

Anyone who has been out of education for longer than 6 months will be invited for interview. Following interview, the application will be referred to a review panel.
