Who is this course for:
From the rebuilding of inner cities to remarkable constructions like the Channel tunnel, the world is full of building and infrastructure projects that couldn’t happen without civil engineers.

This course is intended for those taking the first steps to becoming a Civil Engineer. It has been designed and facilitated in partnership with the Civil Engineering sector in Jersey, and our long-term partner, London South Bank University (LSBU). If you are currently employed by a civil engineering company, you can apply to study in your own right for the course. Alternatively, you can apply through the Trackers Apprenticeship scheme.

This course has been developed to give a practical design-orientated course which will equip you with the skills and qualifications you need to join the Construction/Civil Engineering industry.

Civil Engineering is a combination of many scientific specialisms including mechanics, hydraulics, geotechnics, materials science and mathematics. You’ll learn to apply mathematics and scientific knowledge (particularly physics) to real-life situations and problems that arise from creating and maintaining structures, considering environmental, financial, legal and ethical considerations.

How long is this course and when does it run:
Two years duration on a part-time day-release basis commencing September 2024. Apply now for September 2024.

What are the entry requirements for the course:
  • A Level EEE or;
  • BTEC National Diploma MPP or;
  • Access to HE qualifications with 45 Passes or;
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 64 UCAS points
  • Level 3 qualifications must include Maths and/or Physical Science
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).
  • We welcome qualifications from around the world. English language qualifications for international students: IELTS score of 6.0 or Cambridge Proficiency or Advanced Grade C.
  • What will I study on this course:
    Year 1:
    Materials and geology
    Construction practice
    Engineering mechanics B

    Year 2:
    Structures and construction technology B
    Engineering surveying
    Mathematics B

    What qualification will I gain:
    HNC in Civil Engineering from London South Bank University and Pearson/BTEC.

    How will it be assessed:
    A module may be assessed either by a combination of examination and coursework or by continuous progressive assessment.

    In the coursework and continuous assessment elements, assessment may be a combination of coursework assignments, individual or group projects, and open book or closed book tests and examinations.

    What does this course lead on to:
    The HNC is at Level 4, and is the equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree programme. Students who pass the HNC can progress onto the BEng Civil Engineering degree programmes at UCJ.

    Please note that entry onto the Level 5/6 degree requires A level mathematics (or equivalent) at a B/C grade.

    To progress from the HNC to a BSc or BEng, you must achieve the HNC with an average mark of 70% from four of the modules studied with a minimum of 60% in any one module
