Who is this course for?

The Business and Finance sector is the island’s largest employer. As well as providing the knowledge and skills to work in large multi-national organisations, this popular course also opens up possibilities for the budding entrepreneur to start their own small business.

Across the two years, you will examine different types of business, develop an understanding of Managing People, Physical, Technological & Financial Resources and learn about the basics of Marketing. You will also cover the fundamentals of accounting and bookkeeping methods, International Business, Business Economics, and Events Management.

A range of unit options will be available that can include: Pitching for a New Business, Market Research, Personal and Business Finance, Investigating Customer Service, and Work Experience for Business.

 

What are the entry requirements for the course?

You need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or higher, one of these must be either Maths or English Language. 

 

How long is this course?

A 2-year full-time course commencing September and ending June.

 

What will I study on this course?

The full Pearson BTEC Extended Diploma in Business is made up of 13 units of study:

Year 1 Units

Exploring Business – study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment, and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive.
Developing a Marketing Campaign – gain skills relating to, and an understanding of, how a marketing campaign is developed.
Personal & Business Finance – study the purpose and importance of personal and business finance. They will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, analyse and prepare financial information.
Recruitment & Selection Process – explore how the recruitment process is carried out in a business. The unit gives learners the opportunity to participate in selection interviews and review their performance.
Pitching for a New Business – explore how the recruitment process is carried out in a business. The unit gives learners the opportunity to participate in selection interviews and review their performance.
Market Research – examine the different aspects of market research used by businesses. They will undertake a research project, interpret their findings and produce a report.
Investigating Customer Service (year 1 & 2) – study how excellent customer service contributes to business success. The unit gives learners the opportunity to develop their customer service skills.

Year 2 Units

Managing an Event – work as part of a small group to plan, coordinate and manage a business or social enterprise event and evaluate the skills gained.
International Business – study how UK businesses develop strategies to trade globally. Learners will also consider the factors that influence the  implementation of these strategies.
Principles of Management – enables learners to understand how the role of management and leadership in the workplace contributes towards business success.
Business Decision Making – gives learners the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding of business concepts and processes, gained in other units, to formulate business decisions and solutions.
Investigating Retail Business – explore the current structure of the retail sector and its supply chain through practical activities.
Work Experience for Business – study the benefits of work experience in business. They reflect on their practical workplace skills by completing forty hours of appropriate work experience.

 

What Qualification will I gain?

Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) in Business.

 

Will I go out on work experience?

Courses at Highlands College are about preparing you for the world of work. As part of your course, you will learn how to go about presenting yourself to an employer to stand the best chance of getting the job you are looking for.  You will spend at least one week in a work placement.

 

What does this course lead on to?

This course is equivalent to three A levels (48 – 168 UCAS points) and provides the opportunity to go directly into employment, or study at degree level to go into business at graduate level.

There is the opportunity for direct progression to the Foundation Degree in Business & Management at University College Jersey, Highlands College.

Training Contracts in the workplace: Levels 3, 4, 5 (degree equivalent) employment or training contracts in the local workplace in trust/funds/accountancy/insurance/marketing/event management.

Additional Information

All 6th form courses are subject to minimum enrolment numbers. Where a course does not meet the required number, it will be reluctantly cancelled for that academic year. Applicants will be contacted and offered a transfer to another course if a suitable one is available. 

Anyone who has been out of education for longer than 6 months will be invited for interview. Following interview, the application will be referred to a review panel.
