Alumni Stories: How Summer Balanced Family Life and Study to Build a Future in Construction Management

I’ll be forever grateful to JMEC and Highlands College for showing me that construction is the perfect place for a young woman to start a career. That opportunity meant I could still pursue higher education while being present for my family.

What began as a singular love for learning has developed into a career built on resilience and determination.

For Summer Jones, studying University College Jersey was more than an academic experience, it was a turning point that reshaped her ambitions and opened the door to a new career. 

After completing her A Levels, Summer's focus shifted to raising her family, and studying away from the island was no longer an option. It was during this time that a new opportunity emerged, one that would ultimately change her direction entirely.

Around seven years ago, Summer began working at JMEC, where she was first introduced to the construction industry. That experience sparked a growing interest and gave her the confidence to take the next step of enrolling on a Construction Management degree at University College Jersey. 

Over the course of four years, she developed a strong understanding of the industry, exploring everything from technical drawing and sustainable environments to the legal and regulatory frameworks that shape modern construction. 

It’s important to show people what the industry is really like, there are so many inspiring women across UCJ, JMEC, and the wider industry. They show that you can succeed anywhere on site, in the boardroom, or in the classroom.

Summer is also passionate about the role of women in construction, highlighting the importance of visible role models within the industry. She credits the support of her family, especially her children, as well as her colleagues at JMEC for helping her stay motivated and focused throughout her studies. One of the most meaningful outcomes of her Highlands experience has been the opportunity to give back; now supporting current learners by offering site visits, work placements, and insight into what a career in construction really looks like. 

Looking ahead, Summer is proud of what she has achieved and motivated by what still lies ahead. Her advice to current students reflects the mindset that has guided her journey: Keep building - your confidence, your careers, your futures, and your dreams. 

From balancing family life with study to building a career in a dynamic and evolving industry, Summer’s story is a powerful example of what can be achieved with determination, support, and the right opportunities.
