Student Well-being

Looking after your well-being

Looking after your well-being is a big part of your experience at Highlands College.

We want you to feel supported, confident and ready to make the most of every opportunity.

Alongside the support from our Student Life Team, sixth form students will take part in a PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education programme through Future Skills.

6TH - Future Skills - 1

Future Skills

These sessions are designed to give you real-world knowledge and tools you’ll actually use, now and in the future. You’ll cover topics like:

  • Positive Relationships – What healthy friendships and relationships look like.
  • Sexual Health and Well-being – Straightforward advice to help you make informed choices.
  • Smoking and Vaping Cessation – Support if you want to quit or cut down.
  • Drug and Alcohol Awareness – Know the risks and make your own informed decisions.
  • Emotional Health and Well-being – Tips to boost your mental health and cope with challenges.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices – Easy ways to stay active, eat well, and feel good.
  • Volunteering Opportunities – Get involved, build skills, and give something back.

These sessions are about helping you get the most out of college life and setting you up for whatever comes next.

Counselling Support

Sometimes it helps to talk things through with someone who gets it. At Highlands, you can access free, confidential counselling through the Youth Enquiry Service (YES), based right here at college.

The service is:

  • Run by trained professionals (men and women) and supported by the Student Life Team.
  • Delivered under the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) code of ethics, so you know you’re in safe hands.

Counselling can help you:

  • Work through anything that’s on your mind.
  • Find new ways to manage tricky situations.
  • Feel more focused and ready to get back on track.

To book a session, just speak to the Student Life Team or your personal tutor. If you ever need more specialised support, we can also help you connect with outside services.

And remember: If it’s something health-related, you can always speak to your GP too.
