Petra award

Alumni Stories: How Petra became a Rising Star

When they announced my name, I completely froze. I was shocked, emotional and just incredibly grateful.

When Petra Felgueiras received an email telling her she had been shortlisted for a Jersey Finance Rising Star Award - she wondered whether it was a scam.

It's a reaction that says a lot about Petra. Despite building a successful career in finance and being recognised as one of the island's emerging young professionals, she remains refreshingly humble about her achievements. For Petra, the award was much more than a trophy. It was validation that the hard work and determination she'd built on throughout her journey were paying off.

Petra's route into finance almost looked very different. On GCSE results day, she had planned to study elsewhere and pursue completely different subjects. But something didn't feel right. At the last minute, she changed course and enrolled on Highlands College's Business and Finance programme instead. The course gave her an early insight into professional working life through practical projects and work experience opportunities, helping her understand what a career in finance might actually look like before stepping into the industry, and helping her grow in confidence.

Petra speaks warmly about her time at Highlands and the tutors who supported her along the way, particularly the way they encouraged independence while still offering guidance when it was needed, helping her mature both personally and professionally.

Changing my mind and joining Highlands was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

After leaving Highlands in 2022, Petra moved into the finance sector and quickly began building on the foundations she had developed during college. Today, she works at Hawksford in a corporate role, managing a client entity connected to social housing in the UK. Much of her work centres on ensuring a large property remains compliant with the Building Safety Act, and rather than seeing finance as purely numbers and paperwork, she finds purpose in knowing the decisions and processes she helps manage ultimately affect real people and communities.

Her curiosity and willingness to embrace new ideas have also helped her establish herself within the industry. One of the projects that contributed to her Corporate Services Rising Star recognition was helping colleagues adopt AI tools, and by exploring new ways to create internal guidance and improve efficiencies, Petra was able to demonstrate how emerging technology could support everyday work across the business.

Speaking on her role at Hawksford, she is thankful for the opportunities it provides and is ambitious about where it might take her next. She credits the company for providing her with the continuous support to develop professionally, as well as supporting her with the Rising Star nomination and voting process. But she is equally passionate about maintaining a life outside work. A keen CrossFit enthusiast, Petra regularly competes alongside her partner Ciaran and spends much of her free time outdoors, whether that's hiking, travelling or exploring nature. She is also preparing for a six-month trip across South America, including visits to Machu Picchu and Patagonia. For her, success isn't just about professional achievements, it's about creating a life that feels balanced, fulfilling and authentic.

Petra rising star

It's given me confidence that I'm on the right path. But I would say don't be afraid to change direction, life is too short to spend it doing something you don't enjoy.

Although Petra has achieved a great deal in a relatively short space of time, she is open about the fact that confidence has not always come naturally. Like many high achievers, she has experienced imposter syndrome throughout her career and admits she is often her own toughest critic. The recognition through the support and nomination from Hawksford, and eventually winning the award, has given her the reassurance that she is moving in the right direction and encouraged her to continue pushing herself, developing new skills and seeking opportunities to learn.

If Petra could speak to the version of herself standing in the queue to enrol at Highlands all those years ago, she wouldn't tell her to work harder or worry less - she would simply reassure her that she was making the right decision.

Today, her advice to young people considering their options is clear: don't feel pressured to have everything figured out, college is a chance to explore what interests you, discover the kind of environment you thrive in and learn more about yourself.

Most importantly, she believes students shouldn't be afraid to change direction if something isn't right. After all, if her own story proves anything, it's that some of the best opportunities come when you're willing to trust your instincts and take a different path.
