From Classroom to Checkered Flag: How Sam Turned a New Passion into His Racing Debut

“One day, I want to be up there with the experienced racers, that's the goal. As my grandfather used to say 'no dream is too big, and no dreamer is too small'."

What began as a decision between a 20-year-old Ford Fiesta and a sporty 125cc motorcycle has a Highlands apprentice on a fast track to compete at Jersey's biggest motorsport event.

19-year-old Automotive Engineering apprentice Sam Green shares his story as he prepares for his debut at the renowned Jersey International Motoring Festival (JIMF), taking place from 3–7 June.

Sam’s introduction to motorcycles wasn’t part of a long-term plan, in fact, it came as something of a surprise. At the time, Sam was studying game design, but his growing enthusiasm for motorsport began to shift his direction, seeking more hands-on experience by working at a local motorcycle dealership.

"Last year I saw my dream bike, which I now have, racing down the avenue. It was a sort of, I must do that someday myself. Everyone needs something they love, something they can be proud of.”

After completing his game design course, Sam made a clear decision to change direction, enrolling on the Automotive Engineering apprenticeship course at Highlands in September 2025. Since then, he credits his studies with playing an important role in developing his technical skills and supporting his ambitions in motorsport.

“The course has helped me a lot,” he explains. “I recently acquired a race bike, and it’s assisted me with engine modification, tuning, understanding engines as a whole and making sure it’s in its most performance-focused setup.”

This race bike will soon be centre stage at JIMF, where Sam will take part in races, hill climbs, and sprints as part of his first major competition. He will also be displaying his own curated Kawasaki display stand, featuring around 10 bikes from across different eras, and hopes to share his enthusiasm with others at the event.

Attending the festival previously as a spectator sparked the ambition that he is now turning into a reality. Behind the excitement lies months of preparation into planning, resourcing the right equipment, funding, and racing but with sponsorship secured and preparations in place, Sam is now focused on performing at his best while continuing to build his confidence.

“I want people my age, or even younger, to see that this is something they can do. I take great pride in being able to participate in these events alongside people that pioneer motorsport in the Channel Islands. I wish to be among those ranks one day."

“There’s definitely pressure,” he admits. “You want to perform well and represent yourself properly. But it’s also about knowing your limits and improving over time.”

As one of the younger competitors, Sam is also keen to inspire others to explore not only motorsport, but to find and develop something meaningful to commit to.

“It might seem difficult or expensive, but the best thing is just to start; go to events, talk to people, and learn as much as you can.”

Looking ahead, his ambitions are clear; competing alongside experienced drivers and well-known figures in the motorsport community is just the beginning, and we wish him the best of luck with his events at the upcoming festival.
