Who is this course for?

Do you want to gain an industry-recognised qualification with one of the UK’s highest achieving providers?

Do you want to gain experience with Jersey’s key partners in sport and physical activity?

We aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of our students through applying their theoretical studies to practical, hands-on experience.

We are offering part-time and full-time options for the Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma, recognised, degree years equivalent courses.


What are the entry requirements for the course?

A minimum of 4 x GCSE A*-C or 4+, including English and Maths

OCR/BTEC Level 3 Diploma

A Level profile – DD

Some students may be eligible for Accredited Prior Learning if they present a varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in the sport, physical activity or health industry. This means that some students may already have units accredited due to their previous experience and will not need to complete them.


How long is this course?

The Higher National Certificate is either a one year (full-time) or two year (part-time) programme.

You can then top-up to the full Higher National Diploma.

The Higher National Diploma is either a two year (full-time) or four year (part-time) programme.

Year 2 Units:

Research project

Entrepreneurism in Sport

Work experience

Performance Analysis

Coaching Special Populations


What Qualification will I gain?

Higher National Certificate in Sport – the equivalent of one year on a degree programme.

Higher National Diploma in Sport – the equivalent of two years on a degree programme.

You can top up to a full honours degree with a third year at a Higher Education College or University.


Will I go out on work experience?

Placements in the first and second year are provided with Jersey’s key providers e.g. Jersey Sport, Jersey Sport Foundation, Jersey Reds, Jersey Cricket Board and the Jersey Football Association.


How is the course assessed?

All units will be individually graded as ‘Pass’, ‘Merit’ or ‘Distinction’. To achieve a Pass grade for the unit you must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specifications.

Criteria will be met through assessment methods such as assignments, reports, presentations, demonstrations or practically.


What does this course lead on to?

The course will prepare you for a career in sport through relevant, work-based teaching and learning, extensive work experience and extra industry-recognised qualifications.

During your time on the course, you will pick a Pathway to accompany your degree i.e. Coaching, Active Referral (Fitness and Health) or Leisure Management – you will then complete relevant courses such as coaching awards, CMI management courses, Strength & Conditioning, Level 2 Fitness Instructor or Level 3 Personal Training.

You are also free to choose to undertake courses from other Pathways.

Career destinations include: Sports Coach, Personal Trainer, Leisure Management, Team Leader, Physiology, Sports Analysis, Strength & Conditioning, Health

Students will have the option to complete a third year to achieve a full honours degree and progress into further education and career paths including teaching and nutrition.


How much will it cost?

Course fees will be £8,090 per year, which are payable through Student Finance. This also includes part-time learners.

In addition to the course, work experience and further qualifications – the College also supports two trips abroad:

  • Nepal for approximately 2 weeks where students plan and deliver lessons at a school affected by the recent earthquake – see video below.
  • New York approximately 1 week where you take in the sights and visit locations relevant to sport and education.
