Impressive Academic Results for University College Jersey.

Despite facing considerable challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, students at University College Jersey (UCJ) at Highlands College had, yet again, an impressive year for academic achievement.

UCJ delivers degrees and higher qualifications in partnership with University of Plymouth, London South Bank University, and the University of Sussex.  95% of all students completing a programme of study at UCJ this summer passed their course, with overall grades far outstripping national benchmarks. On bachelor’s degree programmes, 86% of students achieved a first or upper-second class degree.  This compares with roughly 70% of students nationally.  And 73% of foundation degree (Level 5) students achieved a merit or distinction.

“We are really proud of our students and staff who managed the challenges of lockdown; we managed to move the entire university experience online with no loss of learning” said Ben Bennett, head of Higher Education at UCJ. “Thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of colleagues, students continued to benefit from the high standards of academic tuition and pastoral care that are the hallmark of the UCJ experience”

UCJ also delivers HNCs in Construction and Civil Engineering to part-time students in employment.  These programmes both had a 100% pass rate with all of the Civil Engineering cohort achieving a distinction and progressing on to a new bachelor’s degree top-up programme at UCJ.

Jo Terry-Marchant, Principal of Highlands College said, “I am grateful for the dedication of my staff to our students. We are full of admiration for the resilience shown by our under-graduates who have achieved the excellent results they so deserve.”

Lee Johnson, Assistant Principal of Highlands College said “Our part-time learners in the construction and engineering sector faced particular study challenges during lockdown.  Several were involved in the construction of the new Nightingale hospital wing and all faced additional pressure, juggling demanding working lives with their studies.  Their achievements are testimony to their commitment to their own continuing professional development.”

The college also delivers an Access to Higher Education programme which supports adult learners back into education with a view to entering to university courses, on and off-island.  This year, achievement on the Access course also beat the national benchmark by 17%.  A majority of students are now at their desired destination of higher education.
