Social work photo competition opens

Amateur photographers of all ages are being invited to enter their work into a photography competition to celebrate World Social Work Day on Tuesday 17 March.

Photographers are being asked to submit photos on the theme of ‘Promoting the Importance of Human Relationships.’ A selection of entries will be featured in an exhibition at the Jersey Library from Friday 6 March to Friday 20 March.

Three winners will be chosen by a panel of judges including Kevin Brace (professional photographer), Mark Rogers (Director General of Children, Young People, Education and Skills), and Jay Hepburn (Expert by Experience, who has lived experience of social work).

Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to vote for their favourite image. Both the judges’ winners and the winner of the public vote will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony at Jersey Library on 17 March at 6.30pm.

Paul Watson, Operations Manager at Les Amis, who is co-organising the competition, said: “The competition theme has been chosen because it links in with the theme of this year’s World Social Work Day, but also because it’s open to interpretation. I’d love to see images which really capture the full range of human relationships.”

Founded in 1983 by the International Federation of Social Workers, World Social Work Day celebrates the ways in which social work – and social workers – contribute to individuals, families, communities, and wider society.

Rose Parkes, Head of Social Work at Highlands College, said: “Social workers support people from across all walks of life. They work with vulnerable families, empower people with disabilities and mental health issues, and enable older people to lead fulfilled, engaged lives.

We hope this competition will help raise awareness of the vital role social workers play, as well as producing some fantastic photography.”

The competition runs until 5pm on Friday 28 February. All competition entries should be sent in JPEG format to rose.parkes@highlands.ac.uk and paul.watson@lesamis.org.je.
