Study for a B.S.c. (Hons) Social Science Degree in Jersey (and pay no top-up fees!)
What will I study?
A variety of inter-related subjects that will help you explore how and why modern society works the way it does. You will investigate how economics, sociology and politics have evolved in the past 25 years in Jersey, the UK and worldwide. You will then examine the effects this transformation has had on the way we now live.
In the first year you will study:
International relations, making public policy, how to conduct social research, criminology and the problem of crime, sociology, british economic and social history.
Is there any practical work?
Yes. A work placement is part of the second year modules and third years undertake a research project based in a workplace in Jersey. Students find this valuable experience that helps them make contacts and prepare for working life.
Who typically takes this course?
People of all ages and backgrounds take the degree course, from school leavers to working mothers. The combination of different life experiences can create interesting groups that work well together. Many of the students have commitments and family responsibilities. Highlands gives them an opportunity to gain a degree without leaving the Island.
How long is the course?
The degree is a full-time, three-year course starting in September 2009.
Can I study part-time?
This can be negotiated but would obviously take longer to complete.
What are the entry requirements?
The normal requirement for degree level study is successful study at A-level or equivalent. We do, however, recognise that mature students often have valuable experience from work and other activities. We are always happy to consider applications on an individual nature. Your commitment and determination to succeed are most important.
What standard of work is required?
Study at degree level on this course is equivalent to what you would expect at a typical university in the UK. You will be expected to produce properly researched and referenced work of sufficient academic quality. We provide study skills sessions to help students step up to degree level.

There will be regular opportunities for tutorials with the lecturers and each student is allocated a personal tutor who can help you along the way.
What qualification will I get?
If you complete the full three years you will graduate at a ceremony in Jersey with a BSc Honours Degree in Social Sciences. If you step off at the end of the second year you will receive a Diploma in Higher Education and if you leave at the end of the first year you can achieve a Certificate in Higher Education.
How much will it cost?
The Department for Education, Sport & Culture may provide financial help with fees and subsistence grants. To be eligible you must prove five years’ Jersey residency before 30th August of the year you start the course. The fees/grant are means tested and you may have to contribute if your household income is above a certain level. If you are 25 or under you are considered to be financially dependent on your parents for the means testing.
