    Work Experience

Highlands College has a long and proven track record of successfully organising work experience and work-based learning opportunities for our students in all sectors of the Islands Industries ranging from Hairdressing to Construction. This has proven to be one of the best ways for us to understand what organisations need and to build up expertise that can influence the way learning is delivered in the college. The benefits for businesses and students are very important to us.

    Great for businesses

We expect our students to be prepared and work productively within your organisation with supervision. When you accept one of our students on work experience you get far more than an extra pair of hands, you have a chance to spot potential candidates for future vacancies and you are given a valuable opportunity to develop the skills of one of your current employees in a training/supervisory role.

Highlands College has a dedicated Work Experience team who are able to work with you in organising and setting up work experience placements, devising training schedules/job descriptions for the work experience period to suit your requirements/student’s needs, and to provide you with information relating to students and courses.

    Great for students

Work experience is considered an excellent way for our students to try out potential jobs and employers and to enhance their learning and skills. Short periods with different companies can help them to compare career options; a chance to put knowledge and skills into practice, and the work experience gives an extra dimension to their understanding.

Best of all work experience is a chance for students to see where their college work is leading and in most cases, they are able to use their experiences to link with assessment goals and to find out exactly what is involved.
