Foundation Degree (FdA) in Art and Design
What is a Foundation degree?
Foundation Degrees are a relatively new innovation. This part-time programme lasts four years and includes an element of work based learning. They are focused on giving you the knowledge, skills and experience required to pursue a career in your chosen field of study. They also provide you with a pathway into the final stages of a traditional honours degree.
What’s it all about?
This Foundation degree has been designed by Highlands School of Art in partnership with the University of Plymouth. It is a part time four year programme, part of which involves working as a professional artist or designer.
During the programme you will undertake a carefully structured programme of lectures, workshops and individual and group tutorials where your work will be subjected to intense critique, all of which is designed to:
• Develop self-confidence, initiative, enterprise, self-motivation, personal discipline, inquisitiveness, openmindedness, critical judgement and the capacity for determining programmes of study
• Develop a willingness to take risks and other speculative actions, to make constructive use of failure and to recognise these qualities as integral to the creative process
• Enable you to place your work in context
• Develop research skills
• Develop a body of original work
We also want to broaden your horizons by giving you the opportunity to:
• Visit galleries, museums and exhibitions off island
• Attend presentations of contemporary work by practicing artists and designers
• Become engaged with the local cultural community and its development
At the end of the programme you will have:
• The knowledge, skills and experience that enable you to pursue a career as a creative professional
• The qualification to enable you to take a two year part time top-up honours degree in Fine Art
